Technical Writer

Job Location: San Francisco, CA

Job Description:

  • Research, write, edit and design technical materials including case-studies, articles, presentations, newsletters and technical outlines in Word, TextEdit, Google Docs, Keynote and WordPress for dissemination within the company and to local, national and international media;
  • Produce compelling written technical materials incorporating screenshots and outlines, using engineering software tools such as WordPress, Command Line, Github, Trac, SVN, Sublime;
  • Understand, interpret, synthesize and effectively communicate detailed information on complex software engineering and architecture and projects both internally and externally;
  • Create and architect external and internal documentation for engineering use;
  • Guide client on-boarding to the hosting infrastructure;
  • Ghost-write abstracts and case-studies in collaboration with the team’s senior engineers on specialist topics and/or projects and collaborate with them to create presentations on the team’s specialties including publishing workflow, caching, code review, and hosting infrastructure;
  • Maintain liaison with and collect materials from media, publishing, engineering and data experts for writing assignments;
  • Collaborate and coordinate with the development, design and sales teams to handle the flow of information and improve end-user experience through product changes;
  • Revise technical documents as necessary;
  • Work with senior engineering to reshape workflows to make it as efficient as possible for clients by building new tools, automating steps, or changing our service offerings;
  • Provide media training and prepare media talking points for senior engineers;
  • Utilize web 2.0 technology and social media tools for product marketing;
  • Respond to engineers’ requests to write/edit technical documents as needed;
  • Develop relationships with journalists/newspaper/media professionals at WordPress.org, Online News Association, Mozilla-Knight Foundation, The New York Times, Time Inc., CNN, ESPN, News Corp;
  • Identify speaking and publishing opportunities for the company’s engineering talent; gather and organize information on technical presentations and conferences.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or closely related field or foreign equivalent plus 3 years of experience to include researching, writing, editing and designing technical materials including presentations, newsletters and technical outlines in Word, TextEdit, Google Docs, and Keynote for dissemination within the company;
  • Producing compelling written technical materials incorporating screenshots and outlines;
  • Understanding, interpreting, synthesizing and effectively communicating detailed information on complex software engineering and architecture and projects both internally and externally;
  • Creating and architecting internal documentation for engineering use; ghost-writing abstracts and in collaboration with the team’s senior engineers on specialist topics and/or projects and collaborated with them to create presentations on the team’s specialties including publishing workflow and hosting infrastructure;
  • Maintaining liaison with and collected materials from media, publishing, engineering and data experts for writing assignments; collaborating and coordinating with the development, design and sales teams to handle the flow of information and improve end-user experience through product changes;
