Our hiring process
This is our standard process; however, the hiring steps may differ by role to ensure we choose candidates who will thrive as Automatticians.
Application
You submit a resume, cover letter, and (depending on the role) a few application questions, giving us a sense of your communication style and your alignment with our culture. We pay close attention to your answers, so share as much relevant information as possible, and dedicate real time to your cover letter, since thoughtful written communication matters a lot here. Once you submit, your application goes straight to a recruiter or hiring manager for review. If your application advances, we’ll invite you to complete a criteria assessment designed to evaluate the specific skills the role calls for.
Initial interview
Most roles start with a Slack interview, which is essential for evaluating text communication in our distributed company. Log in early, take your time with responses, and bring questions. (Note that you might see “Friendly Raccoon” create the channel but won’t conduct the interview itself.) For more tips, see Jerry’s guide to text-based interviews.
Some roles call for more verbal back-and-forth, so we use 30 to 60 minute Video interviews instead. You’ll talk with a recruiter or hiring team member about your experience and career goals, so come prepared with specific examples that show your fit for the role and the company.
Practical test or trial
For some roles, you’ll complete a project that simulates real work in place of a traditional technical interview. This might be a shorter test, like a code test with an assigned buddy on existing code such as a WordPress plugin, or a longer trial of up to 20 hours using real work to check mutual fit, with feedback from your hiring team throughout. Either way, we’re evaluating problem-solving, design sense, and communication, not specific platform knowledge, so take the time you need. Most candidates finish within a week or so. Read more about what to expect.
Final review and offer
Once a candidate reaches this point, many teams hold a final interview, typically with an executive leader in the business unit. From there, the hiring team submits a recommendation, including your profile, feedback, and work summary, to the CEO for final approval, which can take anywhere from a few days to a month. If approved, HR will reach out to chat about your interview experience, compensation, and start date.
“I will strive to create inclusive spaces along my journey and intentionally seek out different perspectives.”
At Automattic, we want people to love their work and show respect and empathy to all. We welcome differences and strive to increase participation from traditionally underrepresented groups. Automatticians across the company are encouraged to drive grassroots change, for example, facilitating private online spaces for affiliated Automatticians to gather and monthly People Lab series for further learning. Our dedication influences far more than just Automatticians: we make our products freely available and translate our products into and offer customer support in numerous languages.
We ensure our products are accessible across different bandwidths and devices.
“I love the fact that it’s very equal here, and actually everybody is used to just covering for somebody being on leave. I think that changes the perception of women a bit, like not being as worried about taking time out—because actually a lot of people take time out here for different reasons.”
This isn’t your typical work-from-home job. Everyone works from the location they choose, during the hours they choose. We’re spread out all over the world. We track about 70 percent of our projects on P2-themed WordPress.com blogs, 25 percent in private chat rooms, and the rest on Slack. Because of the geographic variance, we’re active 24/7. But don’t let that worry you. This is not a work-’til-you-drop place. We encourage work-life balance, and care about the work you produce, not the hours you put in.
Making the web a better place is rewarding in its own right, but we also provide professional growth, an open vacation policy, generous parental leaves, wellness support, sabbaticals, and more. Our main benefits are listed here. Additional benefits vary by location.
Since the pandemic, we’ve focused on smaller groups, division meetups, and so on, that accomplish bonding and coworking on a manageable scale.
Awesome places we’ve met include San Francisco, California; La Paz, Mexico; Oracle, Arizona; Breckenridge, Colorado; Mont-Sainte-Anne, Québec; Budapest, Hungary; San Diego, California; Santa Cruz, California; Park City, Utah; Whistler, Canada; Orlando, Florida; London, England; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Madrid, Spain; Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Montreal, Québec; and many more.
In addition to our larger meetups, individual teams meet for five to seven days to brainstorm team-level strategy and bond in locales ranging from Boulder to Buenos Aires, Las Vegas to Lisbon, Montréal to Mexico City, and Vienna to Vietnam. If you join our merry band, expect to travel three to four weeks per year.
When applying to Automattic, it’s important to research our products and values to ensure a strong alignment with our mission. Showcase relevant projects and contributions that highlight your skills and how they connect to the role you’re pursuing. In your cover letter, demonstrate excellent communication skills — clear, thoughtful writing is highly valued here.
Be prepared to discuss how you work independently, manage your time effectively, and stay motivated without direct supervision. Finally, highlight any experience you have with distributed teams or remote work, as collaboration across time zones is a key part of how we operate.
As part of our hiring process, Automattic may use automated tools to help evaluate, score, match, or verify candidates. This can include tools that assess application materials, detect fraudulent applications, verify identity, or support candidate sourcing. These tools support, but do not replace, review by our recruiting team.
If you would like to request an alternative selection process, or a reasonable accommodation under applicable law, please fill out this form.
