We are the people behind, Tumblr, Jetpack, WooCommerce, and more. We are looking for a Director of Growth Creative to join our team on This role will focus on directing a team of designers and video producers, in addition to contractors reporting into the team.

We want this candidate to have hands-on creative team leadership and project management experience, as well as a deep understanding of customer success and storytelling content, design, video, and social. As a team lead, this person will at times need to act as an individual contributor as well as mentor a team of designers, video producers, internal talent, and contractors to improve impact as follows:

  • Lead and motivate a team dedicated to crafting, designing, producing, shipping and promoting owned and social video content, motion graphics, and design assets that tell our story and help our customers succeed with
  • Encourage and empower the team and contracting partners to do their best work.
  • Load balance and measure team success to ensure both quality and velocity of output.

Primary Responsibilities include:

  • Directing a team of creators, designers, producers, and contractors in the production and promotion of storytelling and customer success focused design and media.
  • Managing creation, design, video, and motion graphics strategy and operations, including oversight of content focus, creative direction, asset production, workload, and promotion of concurrent projects.
  • Working closely with Design leadership at Automattic to ensure that content produced is visually on-brand.
  • Oversight of video publishing, promotion, and reporting operations for Owned, YouTube, and Social.
  • Hiring, onboarding, and managing contractors supporting the team's work.
  • Coordinating and leading cross-functional and cross-division projects, including work with leads and in-house talent across Automattic.
  • Collaborating closely with other customer-focused content, events, and Happiness teams.
  • Tracking, reporting, and analysing production bottlenecks, opportunities, bandwidth, and the impact of the work shipped by the team.
  • Hands-on help with writing, design, or video work when needed.


Deep expertise in the following areas will be vital for success in this role:

A collaborative mindset: At Automattic, we routinely work across traditional ‘swim lanes’ to multiply our storytelling and customer success efforts. You’ll bring both a clear vision on the impact you can have with the team, and an open mind to working with product, design, Happiness, and other teams collaboratively.

Operations Experience - A proven background in setting up systems, processes, and load balancing to enable team members and collaborators to deliver high-quality work on time and within budget.

Promotional experience - Ability to not just ship content, but ensure that it finds and resonates with the right people, in the right format, at the right time.

Strategic expertise - Ability to see the bigger picture, join the dots, set and carry through on a robust but iterative strategy for impactful motion, design, and media.

Channel Expertise - Should have a deep understanding of YouTube, Social Media, and Owned content, and how effective creative can raise the bar on all fronts.

Analytical Capabilities: own and develop the measurement framework of how our creative projects are impacting the business. You will report out on the performance, measure attribution, measure estimated vs. actualized impact, and overall incremental impact to the business.

Decision Making - Shows complexity in thought when considering resource tradeoffs in the pursuit of measured business impact. Acts as a highly strategic and inspirational leader within the team and among cross-functional partners. Can procure supporting data to make informed decisions. Familiarity with prioritization frameworks a plus.

Communication - Ability to express complicated concepts in easy to understand method, with excellent written, oral, and illustrative communication styles. Listens to and considers alternative perspectives to identify the optimal path forward.

Leadership - Mentors the team for continued professional development. Uplifts the morale of the team with a positive mentality. Love of learning is a huge plus!

Project Management - Develops systems for accountability across teams and drives initiatives forward to completion and measures estimated vs. actualized impact. All team members are encouraged to hone this skill as part of their responsibilities.

Nice to have: Understanding and knowledge of the WordPress ecosystem is a plus, including but not limited to having built websites on the WordPress platform, being a member of the WordPress community, and/or understanding the various products and tools within the Automattic portfolio.
