How Super Digital turned two referrals into paid projects within weeks of joining Automattic for Agencies

Managing 150 client sites across multiple hosting platforms had started to feel more complicated than it needed to be.

Super Digital joined Automattic for Agencies primarily to simplify that infrastructure and bring everything under one roof. Within weeks, something else happened. Two qualified client referrals arrived through the program. Both turned into paid projects.

For founder Chris Derrer and his team, those early wins showed that the partnership could deliver more than operational improvements. It could also bring new business through the door.

“Those two leads basically paid for the server for the next 12 to 18 months.” – Chris Derrer, Founder, Super Digital

For a five-person agency based in England’s West Midlands, that kind of early return quickly validated the decision.

A small agency with a growing client base

Super Digital has been operating for more than a decade. Derrer started the agency in a spare bedroom before growing it into a five-person team based at Halfpenny Green Airport in England’s West Midlands.

The company’s branding leans into a superhero theme. The office walls even feature Marvel memorabilia.

“I’ve still never seen another superhero-themed digital marketing agency,” Derrer says. “Certainly not in the UK.”

Behind the playful branding is a busy operation. Super Digital manages digital marketing, website development, and hosting for around 150 client sites across a wide range of industries.

As the agency grew, so did the complexity of the infrastructure supporting those sites.

The challenge: growing complexity across hosting environments

Like many agencies, Super Digital’s hosting setup evolved over time. Different client needs led to different hosting solutions, leaving sites spread across multiple environments. Over time, the setup became harder to manage and more difficult to scale.

“My brain’s busy enough,” Derrer says. “Everything being in one place and knowing exactly what it costs each month is invaluable.”

The team began looking for a platform that could simplify hosting, provide better visibility across client sites, and support future growth. That search ultimately led Super Digital to Pressable and Automattic for Agencies in August 2025.

While infrastructure was the main reason for joining, the referral component of the program was still an open question.

That changed quickly.

Two early referrals

Within the first few weeks of joining Automattic for Agencies, Super Digital received two client referrals through the program.

Each introduction arrived as a shared email connecting the agency with the prospective client. The message included useful context about the opportunity: project scope, timeline, available budget, and why Super Digital had been recommended.

“It’s almost selling us to the client at the same time the introduction is being made,” says Ryan Dakin, who manages the technical side of the business.

For Super Digital, the recommendation itself carried weight.

“Someone from WordPress recommending you…that’s about as good an introduction as you can get.”

The context made the next step straightforward. Instead of qualifying the opportunity from scratch, the team could move directly into meaningful conversations with prospective clients. Both referrals turned into paid projects.

For Super Digital, the conversions were important. But just as critical was the fit. The opportunities came with clear budgets, defined needs, and work the agency wanted to do.

Referrals that turned into revenue

The two early referrals quickly became meaningful paid work.

One project was completed and paid, generating revenue for the agency and leading to additional branding and design work. The other developed into a larger website project involving more complex requirements, with potential for ongoing marketing support.

Together, the two projects delivered a return that exceeded what Super Digital expected from the referral side of the program, especially so early in the relationship.

How the infrastructure changed

Consolidating sites onto Pressable has also made day-to-day operations easier for the team.

“We can get a site live in half an hour, whereas it would have taken us three days previously,” Dakin says. That speed has real implications for the business.

Faster deployments allow the team to spend less time on infrastructure work and more time on revenue-generating activities for the agency and its clients.

Support from the Pressable team has also helped keep migrations moving as sites are transferred from multiple hosting providers.

Looking ahead

Super Digital continues migrating client sites onto Pressable while managing new client projects.

For Derrer, the partnership has already delivered two things the agency values: smoother operations and new business.

“I’ve already recommended Automattic for Agencies to other agency owners I know,” he says. “Because of how well it’s worked for us.”
